They are just insecure in your presence and don't know how to handle it. Make sure you talk to their husbands...a lot, lol. I'm just kidding again. I have been a mom too long, I'm jaded now. Don't listen to me. I have served on parents boards too and thought I would become an alcoholic for those 2 years as well.

Oh, don't even get me started on the mompetition. I used to compete and that completely burned me out, too. It's ridiculous what people will judge another person for. It's like some kind of validation of their choices. I'm so over it. The older the kids get, the less this seems to happen, from what I've experienced. I hope that's the case for you, too.

It is super freeing. It's one of the reasons I don't get defensive these days when the epic debates pop up on my Facebook wall about just about everything (it IS a magnet, isn't it?) Well, most people can see it. I'm generally a pretty big deal. I think that's why it surprised me at first. I was all "What? Someone doesn't LIKE ME?" Because that rarely happens - or I'm beneath a heavy veil of denial that only extreme un-liking that lift. Either way, it's usually great being me.

This is a lesson that took me a good long while to learn, and one that I work at teaching my daughters -- that your worth doesn't depend on other people's opinions of you.

I love this. Love it so much that I want to bookmark it read it often. I wrestled with this for the last year since becoming a stay-at-home mom. This was new territory and I was NOT prepared for the rejection. I made friends easily in the workplace but the mompetition was so fierce and hurtful. I felt rejected all the time. But lately I've been thinking that it doesn't matter--I have other friends, I am loved and most of all, I think I'm a pretty neat person. And also? Who made THEM decide what's cool/hip/worthy? They are not better than us b/c we are not friends. And I'm not better either. But we can at least be kind & courteous. That's all I ask.

The line "I broadcast amazingness all the time; they're just not tuned into my channel, that's all" is perfect.

I was all angry for you about the injustice of your situation - because I happen to know and be friends with some great dads - and then we got to "Hummer mom" and I started to laugh my face off while simultaneously grateful I didn't have a sip of esophagus-scorching coffee in my mouth at the time to choke on. So funny. And thank you for clarifying, or I might have come up with scenarios why she won't even look at you instead of just thinking she's either painfully shy or super snooty. And this behavior has made me cry on countless occasions.

This is exactly why I found friends on the internet.

In my small town, people will stand...one on each side of you, at games, etc. and TALK about what a good time they had at a party you weren't invited to.

Or that your kid wasn't invited to.

DO THEY THINK THIS IS COOL? MAKES THEM PART OF THE IN CROWD?

I think it makes them people who don't make the world a better place.

I can't think of anything better than to be known as kind and sympathetic.
